5 on friday: marian mellen

Every Friday, we will be asking a fellow #girlboss five simple questions about business, the passion behind her brand and what motivates her to get out of bed in the morning.

We invite you today to meet life coach and entrepreneur Marian Mellen. Her brand is about living authentically, from a place of radical love and kindness with ourselves and others. In addition to the workshops she offers clients, Marian sells really groovy headbands called Zen Bird Bands. A very unique product with purpose, they are worn to remind us of our worth and our value.

name | Marian Mellen

company | The Zen Bird & Marian Mellen Heart and Soul Living

years in business | 4 years

1 | When did you consider yourself a success? I remember I was standing in line a few years ago at Trader Joe's. I was behind a woman wearing a Zen Bird Band- the headbands I create- and we got to talking. I didn’t mention I had made her headband- I simply said “I dig your headband.” She went on and on for about 5 solid minutes about “this company that is SO cool and empowers women through the power of our thoughts. The headband is reversible and stays on my head.” She started to tell me the company name, The Zen Bird, and I said , “I am so happy you love your headband. I remember making that one- I am the owner of The Zen Bird.” She was so excited but didn’t realize how excited I was in that moment. It left a huge impact to feel that my brand was being shared across the product.

2 | What motivates you to get out of bed in the morning? It does not take much as every morning to me is the best part of my day. I wake up early - way too early like 4:30am early - and when the weather is nice, head outside to hear the birds and listen to the wind chimes. I make a hot cup of coffee and journal. Mornings are my quiet time, reflection and introspection. As an introvert (even though my whole business is extroverted) I need that time to come home to my heart.

3 | What is a skill you’d like to learn and why?  Hmm… I like this question. I’d like to learn excel. I feel excel is so popular and I am way behind the times. I feel like, "giiiiiiiirl… get on with it and learn this already." Beyond that exciting adventure, I’d like to learn Tai Chi. I have been practicing yoga for 5 years now and would like to expand my spirituality with energy work within Tai Chi.

4 | How would your friends describe you? Full of compassion, joy and grounding. I feel as though I am an Earth Mother put on this planet to heal, ground and bring forth love. My friends would say I am also really into change- so much that they have no clue what is up my sleeve next.

5 | What is your favorite quote? "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference." - Reinhold Niebuhr

ding, ding, ding! bonus question | If you could witness any event of the past, present, or future, what  would it be? It wouldn’t necessarily be an exact event but I would go back to the 60’s. I feel very connected to this time period in the way of changing up the norm, feeling free and making major progress socially in this country. I also dig the heck out of my grandma Genevieve and would have liked to have kicked back with a glass of wine and chatted about life in a groovy bar in Downtown Chicago.
